BOV-3 Self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle

Self-propelled anti-aircraft gun BOV-3

BOV-3 - Yugoslav production is intended for action on targets in the airspace under conditions of optical visibility and can be effectively used for actions on unshielded and lightly armored targets on the ground and water surfaces.

The BOV-3 vehicle was armed with a triple-barreled anti-aircraft gun M55A4B1 20 mm. The BOV has a capacity of 10, including a driver, gunner, and eight infantrymen. The vehicle has a four-wheel drive and is powered by the Deutz type F 6L 413 F six-cylinder diesel engine developing 150 hp (110 kW) at 2650 rpm. The theoretical gun shooting speed is 1950 to 2250 bullets per minute. The allowed burst length is 180 rounds per tube, whereby the tube is heated to 250 ° C, so a break of 5-10 minutes is necessary for cooling.

An air defense armored fighting vehicle BOV-3, exhibited in Medvedjek (located between Ljubljana and Novo Mesto). It was exhibited on June 25, 2011, to commemorate a battle in 1991 between the Yugoslav Army and Slovenian Territ

The BOV-3 armored vehicle has a 4x4 configuration. The body of the vehicle is made by welding the plates of reinforcing steel and provides a certain degree of protection against infantry fire. The driver and the commander are located in the front of the armored car, in the middle there is a dome with weapons and two crew members, and the engine is located in the rear of the vehicle.

The maximum speed of the road is 94 km / h and for dry land 40-45 km / h. The vehicle has no amphibious characteristics. One of the faults of the vehicle is the inability to overcome the trenches wider than 0.65 m. From other equipment, BOV-3 has means of connection, smoke box launchers, heater and IC spotlights for driving at night. Mounting system for NBC protection is not provided.

The lack of modern fire control system and a small range of the guns of 20 mm limit the efficiency of the BOV-3 in actions against modern aircraft. Nevertheless, during the war in Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo, BOV-3, together with a self- propelled anti-aircraft gun of 30/2 mm "Prague", proved to be the most effective means of neutralizing enemy machine gun nests, snipers and fire points, especially in the battle of urban environments. Therefore, the system BOV-3 in addition to the military benefit and a special unit of the Police.
